Red Sox Stink!
On an everyday basis, Yankee fans shout that sentiment (or a non-family friendly version of the statement).
But how can that slogan sell on a T-Shirt… in New England?!?!
I am just returning from a 10-day trip to Cape Cod, Massachusetts’ version of the Jersey Shore. While I missed my Yankees, I enjoyed a great relaxing trip with my wife and sons. However, there was one sight that blew me away.
Now, my family and I have been going up to The Cape for more than 30 years, and NORMALLY you will find hundreds of T-Shirts stores selling the following inventory breakdown: 50% Cape Cod shirt designs, and 50% anti-Yankee shirts. That WAS the norm.
This year, while walking through Provincetown – Cape Cod’s version of Greenwich Village, only on a beach setting – I did a double take while walking by one of these aforementioned stores. I saw a Red Sox Stink T-Shirt! Huh? I turned to my Red Sox-loving brother, and we both could not believe our eyes. The Red Sox Stink shirt was right above the Yankees Stink shirt, but still… how was this possible?
The store’s cashier told my brother she figured that half of the vacationing crowd is from the New York area, and the other half from New England. Hence the need for an anti-Red Sox T-Shirt. Here’s the best part… the Red Sox Stink shirt is actually selling better than the Yankees version. To borrow a phrase from Sports Illustrated – this just may a “sign of the apocalypse.”
It was definitely the strangest sight I have ever witnessed in Red Sox Nation.
Of course, we all know which “Stink” T-shirt would sell even better than the Yankees and Red Sox versions:
Mets Stink.
Sunday Morning Thoughts
Oh boy! I left for Cape Cod with the Yankees having a 10-1/2 game lead. You have to see how giddy the New England sportscasters are during their sportscasts. Hey guys (and girl), I have one word for you: CURSE!
I just watched the replay of the 18-6 drubbing of the Blue Jays. 3 very different thoughts of the game:
A. Let’s hope Sheffield feels better QUICK!
B. Mr. Cashman deserves some serious props for the Tony Clark acquisition. Plus, isn’t he the perfect teammate? He’s played sporadically since John Olerud came aboard, and then jacks 3 homers like it was nothing special!
C. A-Rod hits another meaningless homer. Anything getting the feeling Mr. Steinbrenner might be getting a tad annoyed? Gee, what nickname will he give A-Rod? Remember Dave “Mr. May” Winfield… could be brutal!
Let me get this right. The Yankees lost to the Indians the other night… because of a squirrel?!?!
I hope – no, make that PRAY – the Yankees are not banking on Steve Karsay and Shane Spencer helping this team win this year. They don’t exactly have stellar resumes. I do hope Spencer has taken enough time to deal with his personal demons.
The NY Giants are not exactly giving me hope for this season. Just remember, we do not have a 1st Round Pick in 2005. My initial prediction is for a looooong season in The Swamp… for BOTH residents.
Despite everyone ripping the Olympics… I have enjoyed 2004 Summer Games.
With that being said… has there ever been a bigger disappointment then the US Men’s Basketball Team? I am not ashamed of their Bronze Medal… we have to be realistic because the World has improved their balling skills, and we didn’t have our best out there. It would have been different medal with Shaq Daddy, Garnett, T-Mac, plus ANYONE who could hit a 3. What I am ashamed of is their thug-like attitudes on and off the court. Larry Brown lost this team early, and it showed. Plus, what was Team USA thinking by pampering these thugs by housing them on a luxury ocean liner. What ever happend to living the Olympic Experience? No one EVERYONE was gunning for this team. And finally… please stop the hype. There was only one true Dream Team.
Even with my negative feelings toward this team, I DID root for them to win. ANY American who rooted AGAINST this team should have their citizenship revoked. That IS a disgrace.
It’s good to be back in Yankeeland, but I have one last thought…
It’s good to see the Mets have not changed one bit.
