I'd been feeling like the Yankees have been playing this week. Pretty lousy. Sunday morning I was feeling better but not optimistic as I left home for the Stadium
I'd got an e-mail during the week from my friend Amy, the sister of the guy that sits next to me, Tom to see if I had my extra ticket. She's the actress that was Kim Cattrall's stand in on “Sex And The City.” She had a scene in the movie but sadly it was cut of the final print.
I met them at the seats to see the Yankees try to win the series after Saturday's bitter defeat. Andy Pettitte would start for the Yanks against Roy Halladay for the Blue Jays. Pettitte walked the lead off hitter Marco Scutaro. David Eckstein sacrificed him to second. Alex Rios singled sending Scutaro to third. Vernon Wells followed with a single to give the Jays a 1-0 lead. Rod Barajas hit a liner to left field that Xavier Nady came in on the ball as it went over his head for a double to score Rios and Wells. We'd barely said “Hello” and the Yankees were down 3-0 after one inning.
The Sunday plan people have just found what is to become of us in the new Stadium. The plan had always included Opening Day and Old Timer's Day. I've been to every home opener since 1988 on the plan. Tom was really upset because he found that we are being shuffled off down the outfield lines. The location where our seats are now right behind home plate will be luxary suites in the new stadium. Twenty plus years of loyal support gets rewarded.
So in a foul mood and down 3-0, Scott Rolen made us more cheerful by leading off the second with a homer and it was 4-0 Toronto. Amy and I caught up what shows we had seen in he New York Fringe Festival that just ended last week.
The Yankees finally got on the board in the fourth inning when Alex Rodriguez led off with a home run to deep center. Pettitte had settled down and didn't allow any more runs through the sixth inning. Jason Giambi led off the Yankees sixth with a homer and the Bombers were down by only two runs.
With one out in the Jays' seventh, John MacDonald singled. Scutaro doubled and the Jays had runners on second and third. Joe Girardi came out to the mound and left Pettitte in the game after a word of encouragement. Eckstein promptly singled home MacDonald for a 5-2 Blue Jay lead and Girardi then removed Pettitte and summoned Jose Veras who came in and threw a wild pitch as Scutaro scored.
Alfredo Aceves made his major league debut for the Yankees and retired all six Blue Jays that he faced. That was probably the highlight for the Yankees as they went meekly down in the eighth and ninth innings.
I said goodbye to Tom, his wife Nena and Amy and headed out of the Stadium and to the subway. Near the turnstile, an older man elbowed me twice as pushed ahead of me. “I'm with him,” he said as swiped the MetroCard three times backwards as I went to the turnstile to the right and went quickly through as he was still swiping his card.
Since I hadn't eaten lunch, on the way home I stopped at Mullane's, the place that I hang out when I go to the Brooklyn Academy Of Music for a movie or a show.Ian, the fellow tending bar is a big Yankee fan. As I ordered my burger, I told him that I just came back from the game. “That was disappointing,” he said. “That's the story of this season,” I said. “One big disappointment.”
