    Although R.A. Dickey didn’t display the stuff that has made him the front-runner for the NL Cy Young in last night’s 6-5 loss to the Yankees, his out of nowhere dominant season got me thinking about some of the biggest surprises in the Majors this year. So I did what people like myself tend to do often and compiled a list:

    The Yankees are not George Foreman

    In most cities, winning baseball is accompanied by a reflection on things that the team in question is doing well. New York, and especially a select cadre of writers who cover the Yankees, however, is a very special circumstance. This breed is so special, they manage to find a “sky is falling” narrative more or less anytime they want, no matter how well the Yankees might be doing at the moment.

    Reflecting on the Yankees’ 2012 Interleague season

    With the conclusion of last night’s game at Citi Field, the Yankees officially completed their slate of interleague contests for this season. Interleague play has traditionally been very, very, good to the Yankees, but this year they suffered from a tough draw. In addition to playing the Mets twice, as usual, the Yankees also drew the Reds and Braves at home, and the Braves and Nationals on the road. That meant the Yankees wound up playing the top team in the N.L. Central (at the moment), as well as the top three teams in the N.L. East. All four teams are above .500 as of this writing, and playing in Washington meant that the Yankees’ had to face the best starting rotation in baseball without the benefit of the DH.
