The Yankees emerged victorious from a sloppy, slog of a game Sunday night, taking the second Subway Series from the Mets (and—more importantly—winning the much-anticipated battle of the initials in the process). The teams combined to make five errors on the night, however, and failed to make the much-anticipated pitching duel of aces CC Sabathia and RA Dickey materialize. With the win, the bombers started their second winning streak after a weekend series against their crosstown rivals; the previous streak lasted 11 games and rocketed the Yanks into sole possession of first place in the American League East.

The 2012 Andy Pettitte story seems too good to be true. That is either a scary statement for those that follow the New York Yankees or a wondrous one. He has made seven starts. Tonight will be his eighth. And, after taking a year off, his peripherals are better than his 2010 season. And we cannot forget that 2010, before he hurt himself, was one of Pettitte’s best campaigns in years. During that fine season when he went 11-3 in 21 starts, Andy Pettitte had a 3.28 ERA, a 3.85 FIP and 4.00 SIERA. This season, his ERA is 2.77 ERA with a 3.50 FIP and a 2.90 SIERA. That is amazing. Roy Oswalt will make his first start for the Rangers tonight after taking almost a half a season off. The Rangers can only hope to catch the lightning in a bottle the Yankees have caught in Pettitte.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, or just don’t pay any attention to the National League West, Melky Cabrera is having himself a heck of a season with the San Francisco Giants. So far the former Yankee outfielder boasts a .363/.399/.532 batting line, which translates into a .401 wOBA, and his 101 hits lead all of Major League Baseball. It’s a far cry from the Melky we knew in New York, and Yankees’ hitting coach Kevin Long says that that’s no coincidence. “He’s a hell of a player,” Long told Joel Sherman of the New York Post. “He has totally gotten committed to his career. He doesn’t drink. He doesn’t take anything for granted any more. His personal trainer is with him all the time. When you go all in and have talent, this is what happens — and it is evident he has the talent…If Melky committed himself to the Yankees as he does now, he would still be a Yankee,” he continued. “And he would say the same thing. He made himself tradeable then.”
