^ This. The only way they were getting Youkilis on a one year deal was to overpay. Another consequence of the $189 million in 2014 or bust plan.

I think that was the point. They don't feel they can just take a bridge year, so they sign older guys to short term contracts to try to get through this

You would think they'd use these two seasons (13'14) while they get under cap/threshold/tax, to take a bit of a step back and try something new.
