Yanks, Rockies pounding on history's door
By Jim Baker
MLB Insider
Updated: May 2, 11:11 AM ET

If the 2003 New York Yankees can manage to keep scoring at the rate they have so far this season, they will finish the year with more runs than any team in the history of the game. Barring a game or two lost to weather, they are on pace to score 1,080 runs. With one-sixth of the season completed, their rate of 6.67 runs per game will land them at the very top of a scoring heap populated mostly by previous incarnations of themselves:

2003 Yankees: 1080 (projected)
1931 Yankees: 1067--2
1936 Yankees: 1065
1930 Yankees: 1062
1950 Red Sox: 1027
1999 Indians: 1009
1932 Yankees: 1002
1930 Cubs: 998
1996 Mariners: 993

Of course, most of these teams had the handicap of a 154-game schedule, so, even if the Yankees do approach 1,100 runs, they cannot quite claim the title of highest-scoring team on a per-game basis. Of this small group, only two, the '32 and '36 Yanks, went all the way. The Indians entry lost in the playoffs and the Cubs, Red Sox, Mariners and '30-'31 Yankee teams did not even finish in first place.

So, let's say the 2003 Yankees do end up being one of the highest scoring teams in history. How special, then, does that make the Gil Meche & Company shutout of the team on Tuesday night? While it is an admirable feat, all of these teams, save one, were shut out in their seasons of offensive opulence. Of the group, only the '32 Yanks managed to avoid getting shutout all season long. On the other hand, that Yankee team was held to one run 11 times, but they managed to win three of those games! The '36 Yankees were shutout five times.

The '50 Red Sox were only blanked on three occasions, but were held to one run 12 times including one streak of three games and one of four. (They were famous for running up huge scores on the hapless St. Louis Browns.) Probably the worst beating administered to any of these teams was a 21-1 thrashing the '99 Indians received from the World Champion Yankees. It was just one of six times they were held to one run, however. They were shutout three times as well.

The 1930 Cubs were shut out a surprising seven times. Obviously, this means they were bulking up on other occasions. To illustrate how often the 1930 Cubs racked up big scores, I thought it would be interesting to take their 12 highest-scoring games and pit them, in descending order, against the scores of the NFL's Chicago Bears from the same season:

Bears 32 Cubs 21
Bears 21 Cubs 19
Bears 20 Cubs 19
Bears 20 Cubs 18
Cubs 17 Bears 14
Cubs 17 Bears 13
Cubs 16 Bears 12
Cubs 16 Bears 12
Cubs 16 Bears 6
Cubs 15 Bears 0
Cubs 13 Bears 0
Cubs 13 Bears 0

I think that goes a long way to describe the state of scoring in both sports in 1930. It is entirely likely that these Yankees will cool down. Even if they drop a half-run per game off the pace, though, that would still put them in the upper 900s for the year, which is a pretty remarkable figure. It would be negligent not to mention that the Colorado Rockies are about on a similar pace, currently projecting to score 1,050 for the season. Whereas this Yankee team has the pitching to succeed with a lot less scoring, it has long been reasoned that for a Colorado team to truly succeed, they would have to get into four figures. Have they finally gotten the lineup that can do that in Denver?

Scout's Take: On Posada's defense
Special to ESPN Insider
Updated: May 2 2:03 PM ET

Jorge Posada is probably the best catcher in the (American) League right now. He's receiving better and throwing extremely well. His footwork has always been pretty good, but now his arm is healthy. I had him at 1.9 (seconds from glove-to-glove) throwing out Randy Winn the other night. He just seems much more confident with his throwing.

Nick Johnson's hot, Paul Konerko's not
By Jim Baker, MLB Insider
Updated: April 30 1:07 PM ET

Nick Johnson of the Yankees and Paul Konerko of the White Sox have something in common: They both came to their teams with a strong presence already established at their position (first base). In the case of Konerko, it was Frank Thomas, whom, many will recall, was often called the best hitter in baseball not too long ago. In the case of Johnson, it was Jason Giambi, signed as a free agent just in time to coincide with Johnson's rise to a full-time spot on the major league roster.

The solution for Konerko was an easy one since Thomas is such a brutal fielder: He was eventually made the everyday first baseman and Thomas was given the designated hitter role. He has been a solid performer in his major league career but has been having trouble of late, going back to the middle of last year. He had substandard months in July and September but seemed fine in August. So far in 2003, he has posted a .643 OPS, almost 200 points below his career average.

"Sometimes you just don't get the hits," he told Doug Padilla of the Chicago Sun-Times. "You go through a bad stretch at the middle of the season or the end of the season, but you have three or fourth months built up before that, there are no questions to answer. It's just one of those things."

Johnson, meanwhile, is being used at both first base and designated hitter and is very much coming into his own. After a rookie season of some promise last year, he has been one of the major focal points of the Yankees attack in 2003. He has a staggering 26 walks in 110 plate appearances so far and is leading the Yankee vanguard as an awesome on base percentage team.
Writers Bloc: Soriano Japan's finest?

By Jim Baker
Updated: April 30 7:37 AM ET

Forget Matsui and Ichiro, writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the best import from Japan is Alfonso Soriano. Rarely mentioned is the fact that major leagues scouts missed the teenager when scouring the Dominican for baseball talent. He was found instead by the Hiroshima Carp, who put him in their baseball academy near San Pedro de Macoris. His long, strange trip to the majors began soon thereafter.

Hi Carissa! How Ya Doing?!!

I thought this would be as good as any place to note the fact that this being "BLACKOUT WEDNESDAY" on MLB Ex Innings that the Yankees will be possibly razzed (lets hope not!) on ESPN 2 tonights game time! That is for those of us who usually get down & mad on Wednesdays because the game is blacked out today we can watch it with ESPN broadcasters comments or MUTE is usually better!!!!!!!

So For Directv users you might look for it on Channel 209 at 7EDT time as Ill be watching it at 4pmPDT time my time!

Take Care Everyone & LETS GO YANKEES CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP!!!!!!!!!!!
