Yankees trade Hill to Angels

Updated 11:40 AM ET March 28, 2001
By RONALD BLUM ,AP Sports Writer
NEW YORK (AP) - Overflowing with outfielders, the New York Yankees traded Glenallen Hill to the Anaheim Angels on Wednesday, The Associated Press learned.

In exchange, the Yankees get Double-A outfielder Darren Blakely from the Angels.

While
there was no immediate announcement, the trade was confirmed by a pair of baseball sources who spoke on the condition they not be identified.

Hill, 36, was acquired from the Chicago Cubs last July 16 and hit 16 homers in 132 at-bats for the Yankees, including 10 in his first 51 at-bats.

But his role became superfluous when New York signed free agent outfielder Henry Rodriguez, acquired backup Michael Coleman from Cincinnati last week and shifted Chuck Knoblauch from second base to left field.

In addition to its three starting outfielders, New York also has Shane Spencer, recovering from knee surgery, and Clay Bellinger, a backup for both the infield and the outfield.

Hill, who hit .333 with 29 RBIs for New York, gets a $1.5 million salary this year.

The trade drops the Yankees' projected opening-day payroll under $109 million, which probably will be below both the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Yankees led the major leagues last year with a $113 million payroll.

Acquired for pitchers Ben Ford and Ozwaldo Mairena, Hill was among eight players brought in last season when the Yankees struggled, part of a group that included Jose Canseco, Dwight Gooden, David Justice, Denny Neagle, Luis Polonia, Luis Sojo and Jose Vizcaino

Only Gooden, Justice and Sojo remain, and Gooden is not assured a spot on the pitching staff when the Yankees open the season at home against Kansas City on Monday.

Blakely, 24, hit .237 with 16 homers and 54 RBIs at Double-A Erie.

Well, we knew that was coming. He contributed well to last year's team...if he could only learn to lay off the splitter, he could put up some big numbers (as a DH). Good luck GlenA.

Good move I guess? I would rather have hill than coleman but coleman is a better outfielder so it makes alittle more sense. I'm not really sure who this Blakely guy is, numbers don't seem to be to good but their not bad. The only question is why another outfeilder? Is this guy a centerfeilder or really fast? I think a relief pitcher would of been better to trade for but if this Blakely is any good, he could be used for bait for a trade. Maybe?

This enables George to ensure (at least for now) he doesn't have the highest payroll. I think that has as much to do with this as anything else.

Sure we will. They could be 8th in payroll and you'd still hear that.

What's funny is that if a team with a higher payroll wins, you wont.

What's more funny is that nobody else HAS won since '97.

True, but the Yanks were desperate to unload Hill at any price apparently.

If only Hill was a more versitile player perhaps he would still be a Yankee. I like Hill and I think he could have been useful this season with his talent for hitting pinch hit homeruns. I would rather they have traded H-Rod but I've heard he can't be traded until after mid-June. Hill must be used to this, he seems to get traded a few times every season. At least he got to play for a winning team for a change even if if was just for a few months.

Why did we re-sign him in the first place, if we were only going to trade him for a minor leaguer? And does anyone in here really think Henry Rodriguez is a better hitter than Hill? Guess the Yanks wanted him to hit a home run EVERY at bat, instead of every five at bats.

No matter what the Yanks do by way of payroll, they will always be accused of buying the championship! It's just a burden we have to bear (sigh)

for DECADES the redsox had the highest payroll in the American league. Naturaly nobody accused them of buying championships because it never happened after 1918.

If the YANKEES had the mean payroll in the American league and won, we would hear the same crap. These same morons always accused the YANKEES of inventing free agency. Nonsense in both cases. It was not the New York YANKEES that decided to put baseball in Montreal, Minnesota, and other nonmarket areas. It was not the YANKEES that introduced the concept of being the highest bidder to baseball. The redsox fans have old man Yawkey and his nutty family to thank for that.

Hill was a big help. I wish him good luck with the Angels. The Angels need it and he deserves it. Hill delivered some key hits when the YANKEES were in desperate need of a few runs.

I don't know how "highly touted" this particular new YANKEE minor leaguer is but whatever the journalists think of him means nothing to me. Vladimir was rejected as a wannabe minor league tryout by the might Dodger organization. Mike Piazza was a 6th round draft pick I think. plenty of top prospects are or aren't, and the same applies to mediocre prospects. It's prety hard to tell at doubleA.

This is a pretty good trade. Hill did alot when he came to Yanks last year. And the money situation goes down and we dont have to hear other fans screaming about Yankees having Highest Payroll.
